The Institute for Healthcare Optimization, also known as iHOptimize, is a nonprofit organization based in Bedford and Lexington, Massachusetts. Founded in 2009 as an outgrowth of Boston University’s Program for the Management of Variability in Health Care Delivery, IHO applies rigorous operations management and queuing‑theory principles to optimize patient flow, hospital throughput, healthcare cost management, and overall healthcare delivery. By identifying and reducing “artificial variability,” such as uneven surgical scheduling or bottlenecks in the ED, IHO helps hospitals enhance efficiency, improve hospital throughput, cut costs, improve patient access and quality, and alleviate staff burnout without expanding capacity. Through tailored services including assessments, simulation-based workshops, and re-engineering programs, IHO collaborates with a variety of healthcare systems, ranging from single hospitals to NHS trusts, to implement evidence-based solutions that deliver measurable improvements in performance and healthcare cost management.
